1-billionth Scale Model of the USS Enterprise

I (like many) grew up with Star Trek and have followed it pretty much through every incarnation on TV and Film.

The new remake of the Star Trek series that takes us back to how James T. Kirk and the gang got together but made the USS Enterprise much bigger than the original show.

Going in a completely opposite way, this is a picture measuring just 8.8-micrometers long.

 

This was a submission in the 2003 47th International Conference on Electron, Ion and Photon Beam Technology and Nanofabrication Bizarre/Beautiful Micrograph Contest for Best Ion Micrograph.

The theme of the conderence was:

A good Micrograph is worth more than the MegaByte it consumes.

Description: Nano Space - The final frontier. The space ship Enterprise NCC-1701D of Star Trek was fabricated in one-billionth scale by 30 kV Ga+ focused-ion- beam CVD using phenanthrene gas. Length 8.8 µm.
